Steep Incline

It wasn’t exactly the stairs that did it

They speculated

It was the booze

It wasn’t the lovers that did it

They postulated

It was need

It wasn’t the drugs that did it

They concluded

It was paralysis

It wasn’t the heart clutching moment that did it

I responded

It was the remnant torn away

It wasn’t the sorrow that did it or days bathed in blue

I finally admitted

What really killed me in the end was the impossible loss of you
