Tick

(For Ancil)

He was old and weather beaten

that day we sat on his front porch

cowboy hat perched on his head

like a parrot on a pirate’s shoulder

with penetrating steel blue eyes

he looked deep into mine

imparting some words of wisdom

that shall never be forgotten

“When ya go out in the woods,” he said, “make sure you pull your socks up over your pants so the wood ticks don’t burrow under your skin and lay eggs. They carry disease and you can get some sick.”
