You can retain the purity of a flame

when you know your universal place

you did not put this air here

that you breathe

that sustains all life

both good an evil

that will leave you just as mysteriously as it once filled your newborn lungs

and all you will take with you

at the conclusion of your life

to the void of self and be

is you

and every single deed

  1. Interesting to think about the relations of flame, universal place, and the oxygen we breathe – and our deeds in the scheme of those things. I imagine, rather than being like flames, we are like fuel for the flames – and our deeds are the things that naturally happen to fuel when it burns.

    1. Your interpretation is exact Brad, no argument here. Eventually, we will all run out of fuel though and I try to remember this. Lummi taught me a valuable lesson in not acting on my anger because it could have cost my child her life. If you play with that fire you will not only get burned, you will burn someone else.
